Concept Taxonomy¶
The concepts in this learning graph are grouped into 13 categories. Each category has a short TaxonomyID used in learning-graph.csv and in the graph viewer legend.
| Category | TaxonomyID | What belongs here |
|---|---|---|
| Air and Fan Fundamentals | FOUND | The physical quantities and airstream conditions every later concept rests on: airflow, velocity, static, velocity and total pressure, air density, standard air, and the kinds of airstreams fans handle (hot, wet, corrosive, particulate-laden, explosive) |
| Fan Families and Product Lines | FAM | The major fan families (centrifugal, axial, mixed flow) and their sub-types, plus the application-specific product lines in the current catalogs, such as roof ventilators, lab fume exhaust, kitchen exhaust, utility sets, and mancoolers |
| Fan Anatomy and Housings | ANAT | The named parts of a fan as shown in exploded views, housing styles and construction, split housings, and housing-mounted features such as access doors, screens, and weatherhoods |
| Impellers and Hubs | IMP | Centrifugal and axial impeller types, blade shapes, impeller orientation, hub types, and impeller construction details |
| Arrangements and Drives | ARR | Direct and belt drive, couplings, overhung and center-hung impellers, and the standard numbered fan arrangements with their plug, plenum, vertical, swingout, and clamshell variants |
| Rotation, Discharge and Motor Position | ROT | How rotation and discharge are designated (viewed from the drive side), discharge angles, inline configurations, standard motor positions, and the rules that connect them |
| Motors and Motor Mounting | MOT | Induction and EC motors, enclosures, frame sizes, service factor, insulation class, speed control, motor bases, and motor positioners |
| Bearings, Shafts and Seals | BRG | Bearing types and life ratings, lubrication, bearing seals and positioners, shaft features, pedestals, and shaft seals |
| Inlets, Outlets and Flow Control | INOUT | Inlet funnels and venturis, inlet boxes, evasés, flanges and flexible connectors, silencers, dampers, inlet vanes, and speed-based flow control |
| Special Construction | SPEC | Construction classes and materials, spark-resistant construction Types A, B, and C, high-temperature construction and shaft cooling, insulated fans, leak-tight and RTO service, and high-moisture construction |
| Bases, Isolation and Installation | INST | Fan bases, vibration isolation, seismic and thrust restraints, anti-backspin devices, airflow measurement with piezometer rings, and weather protection |
| Fan Performance | PERF | Brake horsepower, fan efficiency, fan and system curves, the operating point, stall and surge, the fan laws, density corrections, sound ratings, fan class, and maximum safe speed |
| Catalogs, Selection and Specification | CAT | Reading current catalogs and performance tables, operating limits, product options, selecting fan family, impeller, arrangement, construction, motor, drive, and accessories, and writing and reviewing a complete fan specification |
