Specifying, Consulting and Application Engineers¶
This path is for you if you select fans to a duty point, write the fan section of a specification, or review a submittal against one. It covers performance in depth (operating point, fan laws, density corrections, system effect, flow-control efficiency, Fan Energy Index and octave-band sound) together with the construction, isolation and specification-writing chapters, and ends with the capstone specification.
Because a complete specification touches nearly every part of a fan, this is the longest path: it reads most chapters and skips very few. The savings come from the hardware-detail chapters, where you need only the sections that a specification refers to.
Your Path at a Glance¶
| Target concepts | 15 |
| Concepts on the path (targets plus all their prerequisites) | 259 of 581 |
| Chapters | 15 read, 11 skim, 1 skip |
| Reading time | about 14 h 42 min |
| MicroSims and diagrams to try | 12 (about 2 h 05 min) |
| Quiz questions | 190 (about 3 h 10 min) |
| Total | about 19 h 57 min |
Reading time assumes 200 words per minute, a pace for technical prose with worked examples and tables, applied to each chapter's word count (whole chapter for read, the listed sections plus Key Takeaways for skim). Sim time comes from each sim's stated duration; quizzes are counted at 1 minute per question.
Reading Checklist¶
Work down the table in order. Read means the whole chapter; skim means only the sections listed, then the chapter's Key Takeaways; skip chapters are not needed for this path. Sections in bold teach one of this path's target concepts, so read them closely. A section marked (opening) is the text under that heading before its first subsection.
MicroSims and Diagrams to Try¶
These sims sit in the sections that teach this path's target concepts. Run each one until you can get the challenge right without the hints.
Also useful (in chapters you read, practicing prerequisite concepts): Density Ratio by Temperature and Altitude (Ch. 2); Follow the Airflow Through a Centrifugal Fan (Ch. 3); Airflow Path Explorer (Ch. 4); Industrial Product Line Matcher (Ch. 6); Arrangement Identifier (Ch. 11); Discharge Position Explorer (Ch. 12); Flow Control Power Comparator (Ch. 18); Industrial Grade Dampers (Ch. 18).
Quizzes¶
Take the full quiz for every chapter you read. For skimmed chapters, answer only the questions that test concepts on this path.

Target Concepts¶
These are the concepts that define the job outcome for this path. Everything else on the path is a prerequisite of one of them in the learning graph.
| Concept | Taught in | Why it is on this path |
|---|---|---|
| Operating Point | Ch. 10: System Resistance, the System Curve and the Operating Point (opening) | Analyze: diagnose whether a fan is mismatched to its system from its operating point on the fan and system curves. |
| Fan Laws | Ch. 25: The Fan Laws (opening) | Understand: explain how airflow, pressure and power change with speed and impeller diameter. |
| Speed Change Calculation | Ch. 25: Speed Change Calculation | Apply: use the fan laws to estimate airflow, pressure and horsepower after a speed change. |
| Density Correction Factor | Ch. 10: Density Corrections (opening) | Apply: apply density and temperature corrections to a catalog rating. |
| System Effect Curve | Ch. 25: System Effect Curve | Main topic 13 and the user role: system effect decides whether the rated point is reached in the field. |
| Flow Control Efficiency | Ch. 25: Controlling Flow Efficiently | Analyze: contrast inlet vanes, outlet dampers and speed control by efficiency and turndown. |
| Fan Energy Index | Ch. 25: Where to Select: Duty Point and Fan Energy Index (opening) | Main topic 13 (efficiency) and the Create outcome comparing candidates on performance. |
| Octave Band Sound Data | Ch. 27: Octave Band Sound Data | Main topic 13: sound ratings; Evaluate: noise limits in family selection. |
| Construction Selection | Ch. 27: Construction Selection | Evaluate: whether an application needs special construction and which type. |

| High Temperature Construction | Ch. 20: High Temperature Construction (opening) | Understand: explain why high-temperature service needs special construction; Apply: keep motor and bearings out of a hot airstream. |
| Vibration Isolation | Ch. 22: Vibration Isolation (opening) | Topic 12 (installation and support accessories): isolation is a specification section in its own right. |
| CSI Format Specification | Ch. 27: CSI Format Specification | Create: write a complete fan specification for a described application. |

When You Finish¶
Complete the capstone project in Chapter 27: choose the fan, apply the density and cold-start corrections, and write the complete description, CSI-format specification section and submittal list with the reasoning for each choice. Warm up with the Capstone Specification Builder, which checks a dryer exhaust specification against fifteen consistency rules, then write your own for a different application.
