Industrial Product Line Matcher

Run the Industrial Product Line Matcher MicroSim Fullscreen

This p5.js sketch is built on the shared FanPedia MicroSim kit. To run it in the p5.js editor, add the kit files (fanpedia-sim.css, fanpedia-core.js and fanpedia-p5.js from ../shared-libs/, or their published URLs) to the editor's index.html before pasting the sketch.

About This MicroSim

On a real inquiry you rarely get a product name; you get a job. This MicroSim gives you 13 illustrative jobs, shuffled for each round, and the same list of 13 product lines from Chapter 6 for every job:

Plug fan · Vaneaxial fan · Roof mounted panel fan · Radial bladed fan · Radial tip fan · Pressure blower · Utility set · Duct fan · Filtered supply fan · Air kit · Paint booth exhaust fan · Dust collection fan · Inline lab exhaust fan

Each job has two steps, each with one scored attempt:

  1. Product line. Choose a line from the list and press Check line. A correct choice reads "✓ Correct: line. reason"; a wrong one reads "✗ The better fit is line. reason".
  2. Deciding feature. Three features then appear in shuffled order: the one that decides the job and two distractors taken from other product lines. Choose one and press Check feature. The sim answers "✓ Right: feature decides this job." or "✗ The deciding feature is feature."

The running scores "Lines correct: n of 13" and "Features correct: n of 13" are shown at the top. Mastery is 10 of 13 product lines correct on the first attempt; the feature score is reported separately and does not count toward mastery. After job 13 the summary shows both scores, the mastery line and every missed job with its reason (on a narrow screen with many misses the list shortens to the answers).

The jobs reflect the chapter's deciding facts: backward inclined fans on the clean side of a filter versus radial bladed fans for cyclones, radial tip fans that are more efficient than radial blade fans at high airflow, pressure blowers for high pressure at relatively low volume, and air kits whose enclosure and insulation are provided by others.

How to Use

  1. Read the job, choose a product line from the Product line list (Tab to it, then the arrow keys or the first letter) and press Check line (or Enter).
  2. Read the verdict and reason, then choose the deciding feature with the option buttons or keys 1–3, and press Check feature (or Enter).
  3. Press Next job (or Enter). After job 13 read the summary; Start over begins a new scored round in a new order.

Keyboard: Enter checks the line, then the feature, then goes to the next job; keys 1–3 choose a feature option. Tab reaches the list and every button.

Lesson Plan

Learning Objective

The learner will recommend the product line that best fits each of 13 industrial job descriptions, justifying the choice by the deciding feature, with at least 10 of 13 correct on the first attempt (Bloom: Evaluate, verb: recommend).

Audience

Adult professional development: new application engineers, sales staff, representatives and facilities staff.

Duration

15-20 minutes

Prerequisites

  • Plug, vaneaxial, roof mounted panel, radial bladed, radial tip and pressure blower fans (Chapter 6)
  • Utility sets, duct fans, filtered supply fans and air kits (Chapter 6)
  • Paint booth exhaust, dust collection and inline lab exhaust fans (Chapter 6)

Activities

  1. Round 1 (8-10 min): Work all 13 jobs. Before checking, underline the phrase in the job that decides the line.
  2. Review (3-5 min): For each missed job, find the deciding feature in the chapter section for the correct line.
  3. Round 2 (5 min, optional): Start over; the order changes, so the answers must come from the features, not the sequence.

Common Misconceptions Addressed

  • Any dirty-air job takes a radial bladed fan: the clean-side dust collector job takes a backward inclined dust collection fan.
  • An air kit is a complete fan: its job and reason say the enclosure and insulation are provided by others.
  • Pressure blowers are chosen for large airflow: their job is high pressure at relatively low volume.
  • Plug fans and plenum fans are the same thing: the plug fan job turns on the mounting panel that keeps the drive out of the process air.

Assessment

  • "Lines correct: n of 13" is the scored line count (one attempt each); the summary shows the first-attempt score and the mastery line. Mastery is 10 of 13 lines.
  • "Features correct: n of 13" is reported separately as evidence of justification. Follow-up: for two missed jobs, explain why the distractor feature you chose belongs to another product line.
