Which Exploded View Shows This Part

Run the Which Exploded View Shows This Part MicroSim Fullscreen

This p5.js sketch is built on the shared FanPedia MicroSim kit. To run it in the p5.js editor, add the kit files (fanpedia-sim.css, fanpedia-core.js and fanpedia-p5.js from ../shared-libs/, or their published URLs) to the editor's index.html before pasting the sketch.

About This MicroSim

FanPedia names every housing part on an exploded view (pp. 9–19) or a housing detail page (pp. 59–66). This MicroSim gives you twelve part cards, shuffled, and four bins, one per fan family:

  • Housed Centrifugal (scroll housing)
  • Tubular (axial, inline centrifugal, mixed flow)
  • Plug Fan
  • Centrifugal Roof Exhauster

Put each card in the bin of the family whose FanPedia drawing labels the part. Decide from what the part does: does it shape a scroll, take swirl out of air in a tube, seal a plenum wall, or sit on a roof curb? For the Curb Cap, the roof exhauster exploded view on p. 19 decides, and the feedback notes that roof mounted axial fans use one too (p. 7).

Cards move freely until you press Check, which needs all twelve cards placed. The first check is scored: "First check: n of 12", with mastery at 10 of 12. Retry sends the incorrect cards back to the pool so you can place them again; retries are practice, not scored, and you can retry as often as you like.

How to Use

  1. Drag each card from the pool into a bin. You can drag cards between bins, or back to the pool, as often as you like before you check. You can also click a card to select it and then click an empty part of a bin.
  2. Press Check (or C). Every card is marked ✓ (solid green border) or ✗ (dashed red border), and the first-check score and mastery line appear.
  3. Click any card to read why:
    • Correct: "✓ Correct:" the part "belongs to" the family, with the reason and the FanPedia page.
    • Incorrect: "✗ Not" the family you chose, with the reason. Straightening Vanes in Housed Centrifugal also explains why a scroll needs no vanes.
  4. Press Retry (or R) to send the incorrect cards back to the pool, place them again and press Check (practice). Practice checks never change the first-check score.
  5. Press Start over to reshuffle all twelve cards for a new scored first check.

Keyboard: choose a card in the Card list, then press 1–4 to put it in a bin or 0 to return it to the pool (the bin buttons do the same). The next card in the pool is selected for you. C checks and R retries when a button has focus.

Lesson Plan

Learning Objective

The learner will attribute twelve housing parts to the fan family whose FanPedia exploded view or housing detail shows them, using what each part does to decide (Bloom: Analyze, verb: attribute).

Audience

Adult professional development: new application engineers, sales staff, representatives and facilities staff.

Duration

10-15 minutes

Prerequisites

  • Chapter 7, every section from "Reading an Exploded View" to "Rooftop Hardware".
  • The terms housing side plate, scroll wrapper, cutoff, straightening vanes, guide vanes, discharge cone, belt tube, mounting panel, insulation plug, roof exhauster shroud, curb cap and motor cover.

Activities

  1. Sort (5 min): Place all twelve cards before checking. For each one, say out loud what the part does to the air or to the structure.
  2. Check and read (4 min): Press Check, then click every card, not just the incorrect ones, and read its reason and page.
  3. Retry (3 min): Retry the misses until every card is correct.
  4. Discuss (3 min): Which two cards could plausibly belong to more than one family, and what decided the answer key?

Common Misconceptions Addressed

  • Straightening vanes belong to scroll housings: the card goes to Tubular, and placing it in Housed Centrifugal adds that a scroll turns the air with its spiral shape, so vanes are needed only when air leaves the impeller swirling inside a tube.
  • A plug fan has a scroll: the plug fan's own parts are the mounting panel and insulation plug at the plenum wall; the scroll parts belong to the housed centrifugal fan.
  • A belt tube is the same as a belt guard and appears on every belt driven fan: the belt tube card belongs only to tubular housings, where the belts must cross the airstream.
  • Curb caps are only for centrifugal roof exhausters: the Curb Cap feedback notes that roof mounted axial fans use one too (p. 7).

Assessment

  • First-check score shown as "First check: n of 12"; mastery is 10 of 12 on the first check. Retries are practice and do not count toward mastery.
  • Follow-up question: a belt driven inline fan has both a belt tube and a belt guard. What does each one protect?
