Leak-Tight Versus RTO Requirement Sorter

Run the Leak-Tight Versus RTO Requirement Sorter MicroSim Fullscreen

This p5.js sketch is built on the shared FanPedia MicroSim kit. To run it in the p5.js editor, add the kit files (fanpedia-sim.css, fanpedia-core.js and fanpedia-p5.js from ../shared-libs/, or their published URLs) to the editor's index.html before pasting the sketch.

About This MicroSim

FanPedia's nominally leak-tight page (p. 120) and its RTO page (p. 121) share most of their lines, which is why the two options blur together. This MicroSim deals twelve requirement cards, one at a time, in a shuffled order that is the same for every learner (seed 21). For each card you choose a bin, Leak-Tight Only, Both or RTO Only, and lock the placement. A locked card cannot be moved.

# Requirement Bin
1 Solid drive side on housing (no drive plates) Both
2 Not recommended for applications over 600°F Both
3 Bolted connections on 3 in. to 4 in. centers Both
4 Centering plates if the housing is split Both
5 Soap bubble test at the shop, recorded on the inspection form Both
6 Arrangements 1, 8 and 9 only Leak-Tight Only
7 Shaft seal: lip, Graphoil stuffing box, or double carbon ring Leak-Tight Only
8 Drain: pipe coupling type with plug Leak-Tight Only
9 Silicone sponge gasket and silicone caulk, with an alternative on automotive jobs RTO Only
10 Dampers, if required, must have stuffing boxes RTO Only
11 Sales must specify VFD, cycling and bake-out conditions RTO Only
12 Shaft seal: friction, single carbon ring, or commercial carbon ring RTO Only

A correct placement reads "✓ Correct: "; an incorrect one reads "✗ This one belongs in . ". Each locked card appears as a chip in the bin you chose, with ✓ and a solid border or ✗ and a dashed border. The running line shows "Cards correct: n of 12"; mastery is 10 of 12 on the first (and only) attempt.

After the twelfth card, a summary lists your score, the mastery line and any missed cards with their right bins. Compare the two lists then shows the leak-tight and RTO lists side by side, with the five shared requirements linked across the middle.

Requirements and wording come from FanPedia p. 120 (nominally leak-tight) and p. 121 (RTO), 2021 edition, as summarized in Chapter 21.

How to Use

  1. Read the requirement card and decide which construction calls for it.
  2. Choose a bin: press 1 Leak-Tight Only, 2 Both or 3 RTO Only (the selected bin is outlined). You can change your choice until you lock.
  3. Press Lock placement. Read the verdict and the reason, then press Next card.
  4. After the twelfth card, press Finish, read the summary, and press Compare the two lists. Count the linked rows: 5 of the 12 requirements are shared. Show the bins returns to your placements.
  5. Start over deals all twelve cards again (in a new order, the same for every learner) and clears the score.

Keyboard: keys 1, 2 and 3 choose a bin; Enter locks the placement, then goes to the next card; Tab reaches every button.

Lesson Plan

Learning Objective

The learner will differentiate FanPedia's nominally leak-tight and RTO construction requirements by sorting 12 requirements into Leak-Tight Only, RTO Only, or Both, with at least 10 of 12 correct on the first attempt (Bloom: Analyze, verb: differentiate).

Audience

Adult professional development: new application engineers, sales staff, representatives and facilities staff.

Duration

10-15 minutes

Prerequisites

  • Fan leakage, nominally leak-tight fan, gasketing (Chapter 21)
  • Continuous seal weld, centering plate, soap bubble test (Chapter 21)
  • Regenerative thermal oxidizer and RTO service conditions (Chapter 21)

Activities

  1. Sort (6 min): Place all twelve cards. Before locking, say which page the requirement is on.
  2. Review (3 min): Read the summary. For each missed card, name the question a salesperson should have asked.
  3. Compare (4 min): Open the side-by-side lists. Write down the shared core once, then the three leak-tight-only and four RTO-only lines.

Common Misconceptions Addressed

  • RTO construction is just leak-tight construction under another name. The comparison view shows seven requirements that belong to only one list.
  • Leak-tight fans may be any arrangement. The Arrangements 1, 8 and 9 card belongs in Leak-Tight Only.
  • Silicone gasketing is acceptable on every RTO job. The silicone card includes the automotive alternative and belongs in RTO Only.

Assessment

  • First-attempt score shown in the summary as "First-attempt score: n of 12"; mastery is 10 of 12 on the first attempt.
  • Follow-up question: an RTO builder serving an automotive paint shop asks for "leak-tight construction". Which lines from each list go on the order?
