Arrangement Variant Decoder

Run the Arrangement Variant Decoder MicroSim Fullscreen

This p5.js sketch is built on the shared FanPedia MicroSim kit. To run it in the p5.js editor, add the kit files (fanpedia-sim.css, fanpedia-core.js and fanpedia-p5.js from ../shared-libs/, or their published URLs) to the editor's index.html before pasting the sketch.

About This MicroSim

Arrangement variants differ by one feature: where the motor sits, what holds the fan up, or what opens when the door swings. This MicroSim shows twelve written fan descriptions, one at a time, in an order that is shuffled once per session. For each one you choose a code from the same answer list of 22 and press Check:

8, 9F, 9H, 10, 3F, 4, 4VI, 7DI, 3HS, 3HA, 3SM, 3VS, 4V, 1P, 4P, 8P, 9P, 9ST, 9SS, 4SO, 9SO, 9CS.

# Description (shortened) Code
1 Overhung impeller on a long pedestal, motor coupled at the end 8
2 Belt drive, motor too large for the pedestal, on an extended frame 9F
3 Belt drive, motor inside the bearing pedestal, ventilating set 10
4 Direct drive, hung from its inlet flange, vertical shaft 4VI
5 Coupled DWDI fan with integral inlet boxes 7DI
6 Horizontal plenum fan, motor on top, adjustable base, below size 182 3HA
7 Horizontal plenum fan, motor on the side of the frame on a slide base 3SM
8 Vertical direct drive plenum fan, inlet under the motor 4V
9 Belt driven plug fan at grade, motor on its own base 1P
10 Direct drive plug fan, floor mounted 4P
11 Swingout housed SWSI, motor on the side of the pedestal on a pivot base 9SS
12 Inline fan whose casing opens while the rotor stays in place 9CS

Each item has one scored attempt. A correct answer reads "✓ Correct: Arrangement ." An incorrect one reads "✗ This is Arrangement . ", with an added sentence for the common traps: 4 or 4P for item 1, 9F for item 3, 9P for item 9 and 9SO for item 12. After Check the answer list marks your choice (✓ or ✗) and the right code (→). The running line reads "Correct: n of 12"; mastery is 10 of 12 on the first attempt.

Show hint lists the description's features by category (drive, impeller, support, motor). Hints are never scored. After item 12 the summary lists every missed item with its correct code and the code you chose. Retry missed presents only those items again as a practice round: every message starts "Practice (not scored)" and the score does not change.

How to Use

  1. Read the description. If you want, press Show hint (or H).
  2. Choose a code from the answer list, then press Check (or Enter).
  3. Read the verdict and the reason, then press Next item (or Enter).
  4. After item 12, read the summary. Press Retry missed to practise the missed items, or Start over to run all twelve again in the same order.

Keyboard: Tab into the answer list, use the arrow keys to move between codes (the focused code is selected), and press Enter to check; Enter then goes to the next item; H shows or hides the hint; Tab reaches every button.

Lesson Plan

Learning Objective

The learner will differentiate twelve arrangement variants by naming the arrangement code that matches a written description of a fan's drive, motor location, support and access features, with at least 10 of 12 correct on the first attempt (Bloom: Analyze, verb: differentiate).

Audience

Adult professional development: new application engineers, sales staff, representatives and facilities staff.

Duration

10-15 minutes

Prerequisites

  • Overhung and center hung impellers, direct drive and belt drive, bearing pedestal (Chapter 11)
  • Slide base and adjustable motor base, plenum fan, plug fan and pedestal plug (Chapters 11 and 24)
  • Swingout and clamshell construction (Chapter 24)

Activities

  1. Decode (6 min): Work the twelve items. Before choosing, say which one feature separates the right code from its nearest neighbour.
  2. Review (3 min): Read the summary. For each miss, name the feature you overlooked.
  3. Retry (3 min): Use Retry missed until every item is right, then explain one pair aloud: 9P against 1P, or 9SS against 9CS.

Common Misconceptions Addressed

  • Any direct drive fan is Arrangement 4. Items 1 (8), 5 (7DI) and 8 (4V) are direct drive with different codes; choosing 4P for item 1 explains the coupling and separate fan shaft.
  • The P suffix changes the drive. Item 10 (4P) keeps the Arrangement 4 drive on a floor-mounted fan, and item 9 separates 1P from 9P by motor location only.
  • Swingout and clamshell are the same construction. Items 11 (9SS) and 12 (9CS) differ in what moves when the door opens.
  • 9F is the right fix whenever a large motor needs isolators. Item 3 shows that a motor inside the pedestal is Arrangement 10, not 9F.

Assessment

  • First-attempt score shown in the summary as "First-attempt score: n of 12"; mastery is 10 of 12 on the first attempt. The running line reads "Correct: n of 12".
  • Follow-up question: a customer wants a belt driven plenum fan with the motor on top, size 165. Which code do you quote, and why not 3HS?
