Airstream Condition Sorter¶
Run the Airstream Condition Sorter MicroSim Fullscreen
This p5.js sketch is built on the shared FanPedia MicroSim kit. To run it in the
p5.js editor, add the kit files it loads
(fanpedia-sim.css, fanpedia-core.js, fanpedia-p5.js from ../shared-libs/, or their
published URLs under https://moroshek.github.io/FanTASTIC-textbook/sims/shared-libs/) to the
editor's index.html before pasting ch02-airstream-condition-sorter.js.
About This MicroSim¶
Real airstreams often have more than one condition at once, and an inquiry has to name each one. The sorter shows ten short application descriptions, one at a time, in shuffled order. For each, select every condition tag that applies and press Submit:
| Tag | Definition (shown by the tag's ⓘ button) |
|---|---|
| Hot | Temperature high enough to change performance or call for construction beyond the standard catalog build. |
| Wet | Enough water vapor, mist or steam that liquid can condense and collect in the fan. |
| Corrosive | Gases, vapors or mists that chemically attack the fan's materials. |
| Particulate-laden | Carries solid material such as dust, grit, chips, fibers or lint. |
| Explosive atmosphere | Contains flammable gases, vapors or combustible dusts that a spark could ignite. |
| Clean | None of the above; ordinary air near standard conditions. |
Selecting Clean clears every other tag, and selecting any other tag clears Clean. An empty selection cannot be submitted. An item is correct only when your set matches the key exactly; a partly matching set is incorrect. There is one attempt per item. The feedback reads "✓ Correct: tags. Why." or "✗ Not quite. Missing: tags. Extra: tags. Why.", and the correct tags are shown at once. After ten items the sim shows your score as "n of 10", the mastery line, and every missed item with its correct tags. Mastery is 8 of 10 on the first run. Start over deals a new shuffle; later runs are practice and are labeled as such, because only the first run counts as evidence.
The descriptions are illustrative applications written for this sim. The temperature judgments for the kiln dryer (450°F) and the heat-treating oven (700°F) rest on the high-temperature package ranges from FanPedia pp. 110–116 summarized in the chapter.
How to Use¶
- Read the description. Press a tag's ⓘ button to read its definition below the item.
- Select every tag that applies (click it, or press keys 1 to 6). Selected tags show a ✓ and a heavier outline.
- Press Submit (or Enter). Read the verdict, the reason and the correct tags, then press Next item (or Enter).
- After item 10, read the score and the list of missed items. Start over deals a new shuffle for practice.
Keyboard: 1 Hot, 2 Wet, 3 Corrosive, 4 Particulate-laden, 5 Explosive atmosphere, 6 Clean; Enter submits, then goes to the next item. Tab reaches every tag, every ⓘ button and the action buttons.
Data label: "Illustrative applications", at the bottom left of the drawing.

Lesson Plan¶
Learning Objective¶
The learner will classify ten application descriptions by every airstream condition they present (hot, wet, corrosive, particulate-laden, explosive atmosphere, or clean), matching the answer key on at least 8 of 10 (Bloom: Understand, verb: classify).
Audience¶
Adult professional development: new application engineers, sales staff, representatives and facilities staff who have read "The Airstreams Fans Handle" in Chapter 2.
Duration¶
10 minutes
Prerequisites¶
- Airstream
- Hot, wet, corrosive and particulate-laden airstreams
- Explosive atmosphere
Activities¶
- Sort (5-6 min): Tag all ten items on the first run, judging each condition separately against its definition.
- Review (2 min): For each missed item, say which definition you misapplied.
- Discuss (2 min): Name a combined airstream from your own territory and the questions you would ask about each of its conditions.
Common Misconceptions Addressed¶
- Each airstream has only one condition: the swimming pool hall, feed-mill elevator and laundry dryer items each need two tags, and a single tag is marked with the missing one.
- Warm, humid air is "hot": the dishwashing, pool hall and laundry items are warm, and their feedback says warm is not hot.
- Combustible dust is only a particulate problem: the grain dust item needs the explosive atmosphere tag too.
- Any chemical exhaust is an explosive atmosphere: the chlorine storage room is corrosive only, while the solvent-recovery room with flammable vapors is explosive.
Assessment¶
- The end screen shows "Score: n of 10"; mastery is 8 of 10 on the first run. Later runs are practice. Reading the tag definitions is exploration, not evidence.
- Follow-up question: a paint booth exhaust carries solvent vapor and overspray. Which tags apply, and which product decisions does each one drive?
