SWSI Housing Callout Explorer

Run the SWSI Housing Callout Explorer MicroSim Fullscreen

About This MicroSim

This MicroSim is a line drawing of a single width, single inlet (SWSI) housed centrifugal fan with ten callouts: the housing side, housing scroll and cutoff of the shell; the inlet collar, inlet funnel (with the wiper bar on its inner end, as FanPedia p. 60 draws it) and inlet flange, pulled off the inlet along the shaft line the way an exploded view shows them; the outlet (discharge) flange; the framing; and the pedestal that carries the bearings. No other parts are labeled.

The drawing is based on FanPedia p. 60 (Centrifugal Fans SWSI). It is a simplified schematic, not to scale, and not a specific Twin City Fan model. Rubbing bars, which p. 60 shows on spark-resistant fans only, are left out; Chapter 20 covers them.

The quiz shows the ten part descriptions once each in shuffled order. You get one attempt per description, and mastery is 8 of 10 correct on the first attempt. Explore mode is never scored.

How to Use

  1. Explore mode (the starting mode). Click any part to read what it does. You can click as often as you like. Each part you have opened gets a ✓ mark and a shaded label, and the counter shows how many of the 10 you have visited.
  2. Quiz mode. Press Quiz. The labels are hidden and a description appears above the drawing. Click the part it describes. You get one attempt:
    • Correct: "✓ Correct:" and the part name and the part's label appears.
    • Incorrect: "✗ That is the" part you clicked, followed by "The" correct part "is" and its description The correct part is highlighted and marked "Answer". If you mix up the cutoff and the wiper bar, the feedback adds where each one sits.
    • Clicking an empty area of the drawing does nothing and uses no attempt.
  3. Press Next description after each answer. The running count "Correct: n of 10" sits in the toolbar.
  4. After the tenth description, the summary shows your first-attempt score, whether you reached mastery (8 of 10), and the parts you missed with their descriptions. Press Start over to retake the quiz with a new shuffle, or Back to explore to review.
  5. Start over in the toolbar clears your visited parts and the quiz at any time and returns to explore mode.

Keyboard: Tab moves between the parts (in the callout order, Housing Side to Pedestal) and the buttons; Enter or Space selects a part. After an answer, focus moves to Next description, so Enter goes on.

Narrow screens: when the drawing is narrower than about 650 px, the callouts become numbers with a key list below the drawing, so the text stays readable.

Data label: "Simplified line drawing, not to scale · Based on FanPedia p. 60. Rubbing bars, shown there on spark-resistant fans only, are covered in Chapter 20.", shown below the drawing.

Lesson Plan

Learning Objective

The learner will identify ten labeled parts of a single width, single inlet centrifugal fan housing from a one-sentence description of each part's job (Bloom: Remember, verb: identify).

Audience

Adult professional development: new application engineers, sales staff, representatives and facilities staff.

Duration

10-15 minutes

Prerequisites

  • Chapter 7, sections "Reading an Exploded View" and "The Scroll Housing: Side Plates, Wrapper and Cutoff".
  • Chapter 3, Basic Fan Anatomy: inlet collar, inlet funnel, inlet and outlet flanges, pedestal.
  • The terms exploded view, housing side plate, scroll wrapper, cutoff, wiper bar and housing framing.

Activities

  1. Explore (4 min): Open all ten callouts. For each one, say whether it is part of the shell, the inlet hardware, or the support structure.
  2. Compare (2 min): Open the cutoff and the wiper bar one after the other and note where each sits: the cutoff at the outlet end of the scroll, the wiper bar near the inlet funnel. Do the same for the inlet collar, inlet funnel and inlet flange.
  3. Quiz (5 min): Switch to quiz mode and answer the ten descriptions without going back to explore mode.
  4. Review (3 min): Read the missed list, return to explore mode for those parts, then press Start over for a new shuffle.

Common Misconceptions Addressed

  • The cutoff and the wiper bar are the same piece in the same place: the drawing puts the cutoff at the outlet end of the scroll and the wiper bar on the inner end of the inlet funnel, and the quiz feedback for that pair says so.
  • The side plate and the scroll are one continuous part: they are separate callouts, the flat side and the curved wrapper between the two sides.
  • The inlet collar and the inlet funnel are interchangeable names: they are pulled off the inlet as separate pieces, a plain short cylinder and a shaped bell.

Assessment

  • First-attempt score shown as "First-attempt score: n of 10"; mastery is 8 of 10 on the first attempt in quiz mode. The running line shows "Correct: n of 10".
  • Clicking callouts in explore mode is exploration, not evidence.
  • Follow-up question: a customer reports a "bent piece of sheet metal near the outlet." Which part is it most likely, and which FanPedia page would you open to confirm it?
