Plug Fan Arrangement Picker¶
Run the Plug Fan Arrangement Picker MicroSim Fullscreen
This p5.js sketch is built on the shared FanPedia MicroSim kit. To run it in the
p5.js editor, add the kit files (fanpedia-sim.css, fanpedia-core.js and

About This MicroSim¶
A plug fan is an unhoused centrifugal fan mounted through the wall of a plenum: the impeller sits inside with the process air, and the mounting panel keeps the motor and drive outside. FanPedia defines seven plug fan arrangements (pp. 170–172) and this sim offers all of them. Not every model is built in every one: the current catalogs list 1P, 9, 9P, 4 and 8P for all four plug lines, plus 4P on the BEPL and BFPL, and none lists a plain Arrangement 8. They differ on two questions: is the fan direct drive or belt driven, and does the customer's wall carry the fan, or does it stand on grade? The "P" suffix marks the same arrangement mounted to grade.
The sim gives you nine illustrative jobs in a fixed order. For each one you choose one arrangement and press Check; there is one scored attempt per job. The decision rules are:
- Drive: direct drive or belt drive, from the job description.
- Temperature: with direct drive and a hot airstream, Arrangement 4/4P is excluded (the impeller would sit on the motor shaft), so 8/8P is used.
- Support: if the wall is not sufficient, or the job states a low-vibration requirement, use the P version; otherwise the wall-mounted version. For belt drive on grade, a motor on its own base separate from the fan is 1P; a motor on the fan's pedestal is 9P.
| # | Job (short form) | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Warm enclosure, no belts or fan bearings, stiff wall | 4 |
| 2 | Same as #1, wall cannot carry the fan | 4P |
| 3 | General belt-driven recirculation, adequate wall | 9 |
| 4 | Large belt-driven fan, wall cannot carry it | 9P |
| 5 | Direct drive, hot airstream, adequate wall, room for length | 8 |
| 6 | Coupled direct drive, large motor, weak wall | 8P |
| 7 | Belt drive, strict low-vibration requirement | 9P |
| 8 | Most compact and lowest maintenance, room temperature, adequate wall | 4 |
| 9 | Large belt-driven fan on grade, motor on its own separate base | 1P |
After each check the sim shows the reason, marks the deciding rule with "◆ deciding rule" in the rule list, and sketches the correct arrangement in side view: plenum wall, impeller and inlet funnel inside, motor, bearings, coupling or belts outside, and either a wall bracket or a pedestal on grade (the mounting panel is drawn dashed on P versions, where it is optional). The sketch is schematic, not to scale.
The seven reference cards (drive, what carries the fan, and FanPedia's notes for each arrangement) can be opened at any time. Opening them is exploration and is not scored. A checked scenario can be revisited with Back; it shows your answer and the reason but cannot be re-answered. Mastery is 7 of 9 on the first (only) attempt.
How to Use¶
- Read the scenario and choose an arrangement with the buttons below the drawing (or keys 1–7), then press Check (or Enter).
- Read the verdict: "✓ Correct: Arrangement n." with the reason in a solid green box, or "✗ Not quite. The answer is Arrangement n." with the reason in a dashed red box. The rule list marks the deciding rule and the sketch shows the correct arrangement.
- Press Next scenario (or Enter). After scenario 9 press See summary to read the first-attempt score, the mastery line and every missed scenario with its reason.
- Use Back and Forward to review checked scenarios, Reference cards to compare the seven arrangements, and Start over for a new scored round.
Keyboard: keys 1–7 choose Arrangement 1P, 4, 4P, 8, 8P, 9 or 9P; Enter checks, then goes to the next scenario (and closes the reference cards when they are open). Tab reaches every button.
Data label: "Illustrative scenarios · Source: FanPedia pp. 170–172", at the bottom left of the drawing.

Lesson Plan¶
Learning Objective¶
The learner will apply the drive, support and temperature rules for plug fan arrangements to choose the correct arrangement (1P, 4, 4P, 8, 8P, 9 or 9P) for a described job, getting at least 7 of 9 scenarios right on the first attempt (Bloom: Apply, verb: apply).
Audience¶
Adult professional development: new application engineers, sales staff, representatives and facilities staff.
Duration¶
10-15 minutes
Prerequisites¶
- Plug fan, plenum fan and mounting panel (Chapter 6, "Plug Fans: The Impeller Goes In, the Drive Stays Out")
- Arrangement, direct drive, belt drive and grade (Chapter 6; arrangements in full in Chapter 11)
Activities¶
- Warm-up (2 min): Open the reference cards and say, for each pair (4/4P, 8/8P, 9/9P), then find 1P and say how it differs from 9P, what the P changes and what it does not.
- Scenarios (6-8 min): Work the nine scenarios. Before pressing Check, say which rule decides the job.
- Review (3 min): Use Back to revisit any miss and read the deciding rule; compare with the chapter's worked example (hot oven, belt drive, weak wall: Arrangement 9P).
Common Misconceptions Addressed¶
- Arrangement 4 is always best because it has the fewest parts: scenario 5 shows a hot airstream ruling it out.
- The P versions are different fans: the sketch shows the same drive on a pedestal, with the mounting panel optional.
- Arrangement 8 is common: the reference card says it is the least common plug arrangement, and it is the answer only when direct drive is required and Arrangement 4 is ruled out.
Assessment¶
- The running line "Scenarios correct: n of 9" counts correct first (only) attempts; the summary shows "First-attempt score: n of 9" and the mastery line. Mastery is 7 of 9.
- Opening the reference cards is exploration, not evidence. Follow-up: a customer wants belt drive on a wall that can carry the fan but has a low-vibration specification; which arrangement, and which rule decides it?
