Motor Position Rule Checker

Run the Motor Position Rule Checker MicroSim Fullscreen

This p5.js sketch is built on the shared FanPedia MicroSim kit. To run it in the p5.js editor, add the kit files (fanpedia-sim.css, fanpedia-core.js, fanpedia-p5.js, fan-codes.js and fan-drawings.js from ../shared-libs/, or their published URLs) to the editor's index.html before pasting the sketch.

About This MicroSim

An order desk checks every motor position before a fan is released. This MicroSim shows ten order lines, in a fixed order (pedestal arrangements, then swingout, then plenum and inline). For each line you give a verdict:

  • Standard: the pairing FanPedia lists as standard.
  • Allowed with condition: a FanPedia option tied to a stated condition.
  • Not allowed: a pairing FanPedia excludes ("only", "must", "no options", or a position not shown for that mount). For these you also choose the fix: change motor to (L) or (R), change to the F2 conduit box, change to Top Center (TC), remove the motor position, or choose a position from G, H, A, B or C.
# Order line Verdict Fix
1 Arr. 9, CW, motor (L), F1 Standard
2 Arr. 9F, CCW, motor (R) Standard
3 Arr. 9, CW, motor (L), F2, wall close to conduit side Allowed with condition
4 Arr. 9SS right swing, CW, motor (R) Not allowed change motor to (L)
5 Arr. 9SS left swing, CCW, motor (R), F1 Not allowed change to F2 conduit box
6 Arr. 9ST left swing, motor (L) Standard
7 Arr. 10, CW, motor (L) Not allowed remove motor position
8 Plenum 3SM, motor (R) Standard
9 Arr. 9 inline, horizontal, floor mount, motor position E Not allowed choose from G, H, A, B or C
10 Plenum 3HA, motor (L) Not allowed change to Top Center (TC)

The verdicts and fixes come from the kit's rule table (FP.codes.checkMotorLine), which restates FanPedia pp. 52, 53, 55 and 56. Each line has one scored attempt, and an item counts only when the verdict and (for Not allowed) the fix are both right. A correct answer reads "✓ Correct. ". A wrong verdict reads "✗ Check the rule for Arr. : "; a right verdict with the wrong fix reads "✗ Right verdict; the fix is ." Either way the answer is then shown. After Check, a schematic sketch shows the fan in its reference view (drive side, or the discharge view for the inline fan) with the motor in the correct position. The running line reads "Correct: n of 10"; mastery is 8 of 10 on the first attempt. After line 10 the summary lists the missed lines with their rules.

How to Use

  1. Read the order line and decide whether it would ship as written.
  2. Choose a verdict: 1 Standard, 2 Allowed with condition or 3 Not allowed.
  3. For Not allowed, choose the fix from the Fix list.
  4. Press Check (or Enter). Read the verdict, the rule and the sketch, then press Next line (or Enter).
  5. After line 10, read the summary. Start over clears the score and returns to line 1.

Keyboard: keys 1-3 choose a verdict; choosing Not allowed moves focus to the Fix list, where the arrow keys pick the fix; Enter checks, then goes to the next line; Tab reaches every control.

Data label: "Source: FanPedia pp. 52, 53, 55, 56 · Item 3 clearance is illustrative", shown at the bottom left of the drawing.

Lesson Plan

Learning Objective

The learner will apply FanPedia's motor position rules to ten order lines, judging each as standard, allowed with a condition, or not allowed, and stating the correct position or conduit box when the line is wrong, with at least 8 of 10 correct on the first attempt (Bloom: Apply, verb: apply).

Audience

Adult professional development: new application engineers, sales staff, representatives and facilities staff.

Duration

10-15 minutes

Prerequisites

  • Drive side, CW and CCW rotation (Chapter 12)
  • Motor positions L and R, the standard motor position rule, swing side and the swingout motor position rule (Chapter 24)
  • Conduit boxes F1 and F2, plenum positions S, O and TC, and inline motor positions A to H (Chapters 13 and 24)

Activities

  1. Check the lines (6 min): Work all ten. Before each verdict, say which FanPedia rule applies.
  2. Review (3 min): For each missed line, write the rule in one sentence.
  3. Discuss (4 min): On a 9SS, why does a late change of swing side change the discharge?

Common Misconceptions Addressed

  • L and R are free choices on every pedestal-mounted motor. Lines 1 to 3 show the CW (L) / CCW (R) standard and the F2 condition.
  • A 9SS can take either motor position on either swing. Lines 4 and 5 are not allowed: right swing is CW (L) only, and left swing needs the F2 conduit box.
  • Arrangement 10 has a motor position to choose. Line 7's fix is to remove the motor position.
  • A floor mounted inline fan can take any of A to H. Line 9's sketch shows D, E and F blocked by the floor supports.

Assessment

  • First-attempt score shown in the summary as "First-attempt score: n of 10"; mastery is 8 of 10 on the first attempt. The running line reads "Correct: n of 10".
  • Follow-up question: an order reads "Arr. 9SS, left swing, CW, motor (L)". What has to change, and what is the cheapest fix?
