High Temperature Package Finder

Run the High Temperature Package Finder MicroSim Fullscreen

This p5.js sketch is built on the shared FanPedia MicroSim kit. To run it in the p5.js editor, add the kit files (fanpedia-sim.css, fanpedia-core.js and fanpedia-p5.js from ../shared-libs/, or their published URLs) to the editor's index.html before pasting the sketch.

About This MicroSim

FanPedia groups high temperature construction into packages by airstream temperature band, and the bands depend on the fan family. This MicroSim gives you eight illustrative job tickets in a fixed order. Each ticket names a fan, an application and an airstream temperature. You choose a band from the band list for that ticket's family and mark whether engineering review is required, then press Check. A ticket is correct only when both the band and the review answer match.

# Ticket Band Review
1 Arr. 1 centrifugal, kiln exhaust, 450°F 301-500°F No
2 Arr. 4 centrifugal, dryer, 250°F 181-300°F No
3 Arr. 4 centrifugal, oven, 400°F 301°F and over Yes
4 Arr. 9 plug fan, oven, 650°F 601-800°F No
5 Air kit Arr. 3, furnace, 1,100°F 1,001°F and over Yes
6 Axial Arr. 4, warm exhaust, 180°F 151-195°F Yes
7 Axial Arr. 9, drying air supply, 240°F 201-250°F No
8 Arr. 10 centrifugal, process fume exhaust, 520°F 501-600°F No

The Arrangement 4 bands (tickets 2, 3 and 6) are FanPedia's. Twin City Fan engineering (2026-10-09) advises that current practice does not use Arrangement 4 for high-temperature applications, so these tickets practice reading FanPedia's tables, not a current ordering path.

A temperature belongs to a band when lower bound ≤ temperature ≤ upper bound; "and over" bands have no upper bound. On ticket 7, 240°F lies in both Arr. 9 axial bands; the answer is the general 201-250°F band, because 201-300°F is for select models only.

You get two attempts per ticket. A first miss reads "Check the band list for again." with a hint (for example "450°F is below the bottom of the band you chose") and does not mark the halves; a second miss says whether each half (band and review) is correct, shows the answer and the reason, and the ticket counts as missed. A correct check reads "✓ Correct: , review . ." The running line shows "Tickets correct: n of 8"; mastery is 7 of 8 correct on the first attempt.

After each final check, the right panel opens a band chart for the family: every band on a °F scale, dashed bars for bands that need engineering review, the job's temperature as a dashed line and the answer band outlined. After ticket 8, Explore mode (never scored) lets you pick any family and any temperature from 100°F to 1,200°F in 10°F steps and see its band and review flag.

Bands and review requirements come from FanPedia pp. 110, 111, 113, 114, 115 and 116 (2021 edition), as summarized in Chapter 21. The job tickets are illustrative.

How to Use

  1. Read the ticket: fan, application and airstream temperature.
  2. Open the Band menu (the band list for this ticket's family) and choose one band.
  3. Mark Engineering review required: Yes or No.
  4. Press Check and read the verdict. On a first miss, try again; after the final check, read the band chart and press Next ticket.
  5. After ticket 8, press Explore. Pick a family and move the temperature slider. Notice that the listed axial bands stop at 300°F, and that Arrangement 4 centrifugal fans switch to engineering review above 300°F.
  6. Start over clears the score and returns to ticket 1.

Keyboard: Tab moves between the band menu, the Yes/No buttons and the buttons; arrow keys choose inside the menu and the Yes/No group; Y or N marks review (when the band menu does not have focus); Enter checks, then goes to the next ticket.

Data label: "Illustrative jobs · Bands: FanPedia pp. 110-116", shown at the bottom left of the drawing.

Lesson Plan

Learning Objective

The learner will determine the FanPedia high temperature package band, and whether engineering review is required, for a stated fan family and airstream temperature, with at least 7 of 8 jobs correct (Bloom: Apply, verb: determine).

Audience

Adult professional development: new application engineers, sales staff, representatives and facilities staff.

Duration

10-15 minutes

Prerequisites

  • High temperature package and axial high temperature package (Chapter 21)
  • Fan arrangements (Chapter 11)
  • Plug fans and air kits (Chapters 4 and 11)

Activities

  1. Tickets (8 min): Work the eight tickets. Before choosing a band, say the family out loud, then the temperature.
  2. Review (3 min): For any missed ticket, read the band chart and the reason. Which misconception caught you?
  3. Explore (4 min): Compare Centrifugal Arr. 1 and Arr. 4 at 290°F, 310°F and 650°F, then try both axial families at 280°F and 350°F.

Common Misconceptions Addressed

  • All fans share one set of temperature bands. Each ticket opens its own family's band list, and the band chart shows how different the families are.
  • An Arrangement 4 centrifugal at 400°F has a standard package. Ticket 3 scores review Yes; Arrangement 4 above 300°F always goes to engineering review.
  • Axial packages reach the same temperatures as centrifugal packages. Tickets 6 and 7 and Explore mode show the listed axial bands stopping at 300°F.

Assessment

  • First-attempt score shown in Explore mode as "First-attempt score: n of 8"; mastery is 7 of 8 on the first attempt. The running line "Tickets correct: n of 8" also counts second-attempt successes.
  • Follow-up question: a customer asks for an Arrangement 4 plug fan at 290°F. Which band applies, and what should you confirm with the factory?
