Plant and Facilities Staff¶
This path is for you if you look after fans that are already installed and need to identify one, describe it correctly when you call for parts or a replacement, and recognize the hardware around it. It teaches you to name a fan's parts from an exploded view, to read its arrangement, rotation, discharge and motor nameplate, and to recognize its bearings and lubrication, shaft seals, drains, spark-resistant construction, vibration isolation and anti-backspin devices.
This is the shortest path. It reads only the foundation and orientation chapters in full and picks single sections out of the hardware chapters. It does not teach maintenance or repair procedures, which are outside the scope of this book.
Your Path at a Glance¶
| Target concepts | 10 |
| Concepts on the path (targets plus all their prerequisites) | 48 of 581 |
| Chapters | 2 read, 12 skim, 13 skip |
| Reading time | about 3 h 47 min |
| MicroSims and diagrams to try | 12 (about 2 h 00 min) |
| Quiz questions | 46 (about 46 min) |
| Total | about 6 h 33 min |
Reading time assumes 200 words per minute, a pace for technical prose with worked examples and tables, applied to each chapter's word count (whole chapter for read, the listed sections plus Key Takeaways for skim). Sim time comes from each sim's stated duration; quizzes are counted at 1 minute per question.
Reading Checklist¶
Work down the table in order. Read means the whole chapter; skim means only the sections listed, then the chapter's Key Takeaways; skip chapters are not needed for this path. Sections in bold teach one of this path's target concepts, so read them closely. A section marked (opening) is the text under that heading before its first subsection.
MicroSims and Diagrams to Try¶
These sims sit in the sections that teach this path's target concepts. Run each one until you can get the challenge right without the hints.
Also useful (in chapters you read, practicing prerequisite concepts): Anatomy of a Fan Duty Statement (Ch. 1); Airstream Classifier (Ch. 1); Discharge Position Explorer (Ch. 12); Inlet Box Position Dial (Ch. 12).
Quizzes¶
Take the full quiz for every chapter you read. For skimmed chapters, answer only the questions that test concepts on this path.
| Chapter | Questions |
|---|---|
| 1. Air, Pressure and the Fan | All 10 questions |
| 2. Airstreams, Total Pressure and Standard Air | 6, 7, 10 |
| 3. Basic Fan Anatomy | 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 |
| 4. Centrifugal, Axial and Mixed Flow Fans | 1, 9 |
| 8. Centrifugal and Axial Impeller Types | 8, 9 |
| 11. Drives and Standard Fan Arrangements | 1, 8 |
| 12. Discharge Positions and Rotation | All 10 questions |
| 13. Rotation and Discharge Codes | 6, 10 |
| 20. Construction Classes, Materials and Spark Resistance | 3, 9 |
| 22. Fan Bases and Vibration Isolation | 3, 4, 6 |
| 23. Spring Isolators, Restraints and Field Measurement | 4, 5 |
Target Concepts¶
These are the concepts that define the job outcome for this path. Everything else on the path is a prerequisite of one of them in the learning graph.
| Concept | Taught in | Why it is on this path |
|---|---|---|
| Exploded View | Ch. 7: Reading an Exploded View | Remember: identify the major parts of a fan from an exploded view. |
| Fan Arrangement | Ch. 11: The Fan Arrangement (opening) | Understand: describe how an arrangement determines where the motor, bearings and impeller sit. |
| Rotation and Discharge Code | Ch. 13: Rotation and Discharge Code (opening) | Apply: write the complete rotation and discharge designation for a fan you are looking at. |
| Motor Nameplate | Ch. 14: The Motor Nameplate | Topic 7: identify the installed motor before ordering a like-for-like replacement. |
| Bearing Lubrication | Ch. 16: Bearing Lubrication | Topic 8: bearings and lubrication (oil mist, static oil, grease). |
| Shaft Seal | Ch. 16: Shaft Seals (opening) | Evaluate: critique an accessory list, for example shaft seals for leak-tight service. |
| Housing Drain | Ch. 20: Housing Drain | Evaluate: critique an accessory list for missing items, such as drains for wet service. |
| Spark Resistant Construction | Ch. 20: Spark Resistant Construction (opening) | Remember and Understand: the three spark-resistant types and what each does and does not protect against. |
| Vibration Isolation | Ch. 22: Vibration Isolation (opening) | Topic 12: isolation bases and isolators under installed fans. |
| Anti-Backspin Device | Ch. 23: Anti-Backspin Devices | Topic 12: installation and support accessories (anti-backspin devices). |
When You Finish¶
Walk up to a fan in your plant and write down its arrangement, rotation and discharge viewed from the drive side, and its motor nameplate line; practice the code first in the Rotation and Discharge Code Builder. If you order fans as well as maintain them, continue with the Inside Sales and Customer Service path, which adds model codes, catalogs and the complete fan description.
